We sampled a bottle of house red from the extensive wine menu and at only €12.50 it did not disappoint .

This is comfort food at its best, very necessary for the weary traveller who loves amazing food. The side vegetables were beautifully crisp and the portions enough to satisfy but not over- face!  After all, space for the dessert is rather essential, because you just know that it's going to be top notch therefore rude not to indulge in it!

Before you order you will be served the most delicious rustic bread, baked on the premises with accompaniments of artisan butter churned with quince, paprika-infused alioli and cream cheese with local herbs: all prepared in-house and each a taste sensation.

Having had time to embrace the fact that the starter was so glorious and expound upon the virtues of the chef - and build him up to Olympian god like proportions - the main dish arrived with sufficient time lapse to be eagerly anticipated so that we could sample the sumptuous delights on offer and we were once again another planet away from disappointed! The beautiful courteous waiting staff elegantly delivered our plates...we both opted for the moroccan Atlas style slow cooked leg of lamb with ginger and coriander, which was meant to be served with cous cous, but the staff obligingly served it with potato puree following our request (nothing appears too much trouble). This was served with a side order of grilled asparagus and courgettes. The lamb- so tender that a knife was barely required - arrived resting on a bed of puree potato and liberally drizzled with accompanying creamy Moroccan sauce with beautiful figs and had a sensational taste.

The full-bodied oaky flavour perfectly enhanced the main. But before that we chose to share a starter of Buffalo Mozzarella, semi-dried tomatoes and basil and black olive tapenade. Simply the BEST. Soft and creamy texture, perfectly enhanced by the tapenade and tangy tomato flavours. Each mouthful has to be savoured.

Upon arriving at Atuvera in the evening, the carefully considered atmosphere is immediately relaxing: fairy lights are casually strewn amongst the palm fronds and ferns in the al fresco dining area. Soothing music provides just the right ambience and you will be shown to a table with a warming fire close-by.

We are two writers who came to Tenerife to get away from our day-to-day to write our novels for a week back in March of this year. How fortunate we happened to be staying in La Vera because once we had discovered the "Atuvera" restaurant, we found ourselves back there EVERY night.

During that week we sampled what we consider to be amongst the FINEST food we have both ever tasted. The chef is a creative genius. The waiting staff, considerate and so beautifully mannered. In a world where dining experiences can be a haphazard gamble, this place is a haven of relaxation and exquisite treats for the palate and has moved us to comment. It's just so special.

What can we say about the raspberry mousse with chocolate and wild berry coulis with walnut crumble...the name says it all! Being two people that are more fond of savoury food we both have to say that raving about puddings is not normally our scene, but oh my days, this is worthy of a rave. A complete harmony of flavours and textures: the tart mousse and coulis with the bitter dark chocolate all sweetened by the miniature walnut crumble buttery biscuit type discs! We both felt a bit bereft when the last mouthfuls ended but super-full and content. A complimentary jerez sherry and charming conversation with the lovely manager Jose, who has obviously been chosen for his front of house superb skills, and the bill arrived! €53 - a mini price for a classy, beautiful meal served in such inviting warm ambience. Our last thoughts as we drifted through the fairy light strewn ferns and fronds to the exit...see you tomorrow!
